Introduction to rhythms with the konnakol

Balakumar PARAMALINGAM
Indian percussionist
One of the leading artists in Europe in Indian percussion. Balakumar Paramalingam started learning Carnatic music at the age of 9 under the guidance of his father Sinathamby Paramalingam, himself a Mridangam and Ghatam player. A versatile percussionist, he also excels in the art of playing the Kanjira and Morsing and masters perfectly the art of konnakol (rhythmic percussive language of Indian music). His artistic path was made with great masters of percussion. He is a student of the famous Maestro Karaikudi R Krishnamurthy and the brothers A.S Ranganathan and A.S Krishnan.
“Bala” has shared the stage with the greatest artists of Indian classical music:
L SUBRAMANIAM, ASHOK PATAK, Sanju SAHAI. A travelling musician, he has collaborated in different styles of music and played with international artists: Gilles Apap, Dominique di Piazza (revealed by John Mc Laughlin) with whom he founded the group Carnatic Jazz. He is also a teacher who devotes himself to the transmission of his art during seminars and master classes. Balakumar is a rising star and certainly one of the best representatives of mridangam still little known in Europe.
